About Course

The Certified Operations Management Specialist (COMS) program is a comprehensive, practical certification focused on the principles and methodologies for maximizing operational efficiency and competitive advantage. Participants will master core concepts such as Process Analysis, Supply Chain Management, Quality Control (Six Sigma), and Inventory Management. The curriculum emphasizes applying quantitative and analytical tools to design effective production systems, optimize resource utilization, reduce waste, and manage complex global supply chains. Successful graduates will be prepared to lead operational improvements, manage logistics, implement Lean methodologies, and drive strategic change within manufacturing, service, and technology sectors.

What Will You Learn?

Upon successful completion of the COMS program, participants will be able to:
Map, measure, and analyze business processes to identify bottlenecks, calculate capacity, and implement improvements using Lean principles.
1. Design and manage effective global supply chains, addressing issues like
network design, risk, resilience, and ethical sourcing.
2. Apply statistical tools and methodologies, including Six Sigma (DMAIC), to
monitor process performance, reduce variation, and achieve near-perfect
quality.
3. Utilize quantitative models (e.g., EOQ, ROP) and software systems to forecast demand, manage stock levels, and minimize carrying and ordering costs.
4. Develop effective production planning and scheduling systems, including
Material Requirements Planning (MRP) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) concepts.
5. Align operational decisions with overall corporate strategy, effectively managing capacity, technology adoption, and process innovation.

Operations Strategy and Process Analysis (35 Hours)

Strategic Role of Operations: Competitive priorities (cost, quality, speed, flexibility), order qualifiers vs. order winners.
Process Mapping & Analysis: Flow charts, value stream mapping, and identifying value-added vs. non-value-added activities.
Process Metrics: Throughput rate, flow time, cycle time, utilization, and bottleneck analysis
Capacity Planning: Short-term vs. long-term capacity decisions, capacity cushion, and economies of scale/scope.
Facility Layout and Location: Principles of layout design (product, process, fixed-position), and analytical methods for facility location.
Lab Focus: Analyzing a service or manufacturing process flow chart to calculate the bottleneck and identify opportunities for a 20% flow time reduction.

Quality Management and Six Sigma (35 Hours)

Total Quality Management (TQM): Principles, leadership, and customer focus.
Quality Tools: Pareto charts, Fishbone diagrams, check sheets, and scatter diagrams.
Statistical Process Control (SPC): Understanding process variation, using Control Charts (xˉ-charts, R-charts, p-charts) to monitor stability
Six Sigma Methodology (DMAIC): Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control.
Process Capability: Calculating Cp and Cpk indices to assess if a process can meet specifications.
Quality Standards: Introduction to ISO 9000.
Case Study: Applying the DMAIC framework to resolve a persistent quality defect issue in a high-volume assembly line.

Supply Chain and Logistics Management (45 Hours)

Supply Chain Design: Push vs. Pull systems (Lean vs. Agile supply chains).
Demand Forecasting: Qualitative vs. quantitative methods (moving averages, exponential smoothing), and measuring forecast accuracy (MAD, MSE).
Inventory Management: Costs associated with inventory, the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) model, and Reorder Point (ROP) calculation.
Material Requirements Planning (MRP) & ERP: Function, inputs (BOM, Master Schedule), and output of MRP systems.
Logistics and Distribution: Transportation modes, warehousing strategy, and reverse logistics.
Supply Chain Risk and Resilience: Identifying vulnerabilities and developing mitigation strategies (e.g., dual sourcing, geographical diversification).
Lab Focus: Developing a demand forecast and calculating the optimal EOQ and safety stock levels for two critical components based on variable demand data.
